A Christmas disaster struck for many families when the popular Miller & Carter restaurant had to cancel their dinner bookings on the big day. Imagine the disappointment!
On Christmas Day, the Miller & Carter steakhouse in Hockley Heath found itself in a tricky situation. With a £100 price tag for adults and £60 for children, the restaurant had to turn away customers due to a kitchen fault, leaving families scrambling to make alternative plans.
Among those affected was James Munro and his large party of 13, including his sister who had traveled from Devon. They had a noon booking, but James only learned of the issue when a friend, whose daughter worked at the venue, informed him that staff had been told not to come in.
James shared his frustration on the venue's Facebook page, expressing his disappointment at not being informed sooner. He believed around 300 guests were turned away, including his own family and friends.
"It was devastating," James told BirminghamLive. "We didn't get a call, and finding out from a friend was a shock. My sister had traveled a long way, and we were all looking forward to a special Christmas meal."
The staff at Miller & Carter explained that there was a problem with the extractor fan, preventing the ovens from turning on. James and his party ended up at a nearby garage with a Little Waitrose, where they picked up some last-minute supplies, including vegetables, chicken breasts, and even a couple of vanilla cheesecakes.
But the damage was done. The meal they had paid for, costing £420, was a write-off, and James hasn't received a refund yet.
"I can't help but think there must have been a way to resolve this, especially on Christmas Day," James said. "Why not offer an alternative, like steaks or a bottle of wine? It's the least they could have done."
Miller & Carter's management team took to Facebook to apologize for the inconvenience, explaining the unexpected electrical issue with their extractor fan system. They promised to contact all affected bookings and offered a full refund along with a complimentary three-course meal and drinks.
The restaurant's spokeswoman expressed their devastation over the closure, stating that Christmas Day is the most important day of the year for their guests and the restaurant. She highlighted the quick response of their team, who worked hard to fix the problem and welcome guests back on Boxing Day.
But here's where it gets controversial: should a national company like Miller & Carter have been better prepared for such an issue, especially on a day as important as Christmas? And what about the families who missed out on their special meal?
