In a stunning upset that has college football buzzing, Indiana's quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, has clinched the coveted 2025 Heisman Trophy! This victory marks a historic moment for the Hoosiers, but the journey to the top was anything but ordinary.
Announced on December 13, 2025, during ABC's Heisman Trophy Ceremony, Mendoza's triumph was a testament to his exceptional talent and leadership. He secured the win with a commanding 2,362 points, including an impressive 643 first-place votes. But here's where it gets interesting: Vanderbilt's Diego Pavia put up a strong fight, finishing second with 1,435 points, while Notre Dame's Jeremiyah Love secured third place. And this is the part most people miss: Ohio State's Julian Sayin, a strong contender, finished fourth, showing the depth of talent in college football.
Mendoza, a redshirt junior, etched his name in Indiana's history books as their first-ever Heisman winner. Prior to his victory, the highest a Hoosier had ever placed was Anthony Thompson's second-place finish in 1989. This win is a massive leap forward for the program.
